At the turn of the 19th Century, America experiences an age of unprecedented economic growth… and struggle. George McMurtry runs a steel mill in Western Pennsylvania, but growing labor tensions and subsequent strikes make the task ever more difficult. In a decision that would impact many notable icons of the era, he steers his company and community in a bold, new direction

However, the fine line between prosperity and infamy only becomes finer. Caught in the whirlwind of unethical business practices that dominate the times, McMurtry is repeatedly challenged to re-evaluate his ideals and legacy, as he confronts an unruly union organizer, an ambitious journalist, and the very men he admires.

This two-act musical is about a town in Western Pennsylvania during the height of the Industrial Age.   Based on the play of the same name by Anthony E. Gallo

In the early 1890’s, steel tycoon George McMurtry, tries to produce a unique marriage between architecture and industrialism to build a workingman's paradise in southwestern Pennsylvania. But his goal is also to destroy strikers and keep compliant workers happy. He hires Frederick Law Olmsted, the Nation's preeminent architect, to design the town of Vandergrift, named after his partner, Captain Jacob J. Vandergrift.  Ida Tarbell, who will someday expose J. D. Rockefeller, is intrigued by the idea and visits the town. She and McMurtry clash over his flawed idealism and herein the early 1890’s, steel tycoon George McMurtry, tries to produce a unique marriage between architecture and industrialism to build a workingman's paradise in southwestern Pennsylvania.
